Every child develops language at their own pace—but knowing the typical communication milestones can help you spot when extra support might be helpful. Early identification makes a big difference, because speech and language skills are the foundation for learning, friendships, and confidence.

📊 What is a Speech Delay?

A speech delay means a child is not meeting speech and language expectations for their age. This can affect how they make sounds (articulation) or how they understand/use words and sentences to communicate (language).

🔍 Common Signs by Age

Around 12 Months

  • Limited babbling (few consonant sounds like “b,” “m,” “d”)

  • Not using gestures such as pointing or waving

  • Doesn’t respond to their name or simple requests like “come here”

Around 18 Months

  • Fewer than 10–15 words

  • Difficulty imitating sounds

  • Rarely combines gestures with sounds or words to communicate

Around 24 Months

  • Fewer than 50 words or not starting to combine two words (e.g., “more milk”)

  • Hard to understand, even for parents

  • Doesn’t follow simple directions like “get the ball”

  • Not producing /p, b, d, m, n, h, w/ sounds + vowels

3- 5 years old

  • Speech that’s hard for strangers to understand

  • Very limited vocabulary or short phrases only

  • Frustration when trying to talk, frequent tantrums related to communication

  • Substituting or omitting the following sounds: /k, g, f, v, s, z, l, t, sh, ch/

💡 What Parents Can Do

  • Get a Hearing Screening: Rule out hearing concerns first.

  • Seek an Evaluation: A certified speech-language pathologist (SLP) can assess and recommend next steps.

🌱 Early Support Matters

Speech therapy is most effective when started early—often before age three. Many children make remarkable progress with the right strategies and family involvement!
